Excellent text and photos This is an excellent book that includes informative (and often humorous) text and superb photos (done by Michael Dirr too!). I've used it in combination with his massive reference book (Manual of Woody Landscape Plants) which has lots of technical info (leaf, stem, bark, etc. shape, color, etc) but drawings rather than pictures) to learn about shrubs and trees. Mr. Dirr is considered THE guru for shrubs and tree info (at least around these parts) and deservedly so. The only thing I'd like to see more of is info on how to get the trees/shrubs to really thrive (be the best they can be).
Great Resource for Finding Just the Right Plant... What a tome! 493 pages of trees and shrubs which manages-- only just barely-- to not be overwhelming. ^M
Outstanding resource This is an outstanding resource. Horticulture students, landscapers, and home gardeners will all benefit from the breadth of the information, the extensive color photos, and Prof. Dirr's candid assessments. |
